MICRO CREDIT(SACCOS) PROGRAM for low cost water supply systems (wells, boreholes, family water pumps, community water pumps and pole model pumps) is designed for the residents of two wards of Utalingolo and Uwemba in Njombe region to have access to micro credit at only 7% of interest rate instead of the common interest rates in Tanzania which is 20–30%.This program started at the beginning of 2012 and is expected to end up in October 2013. The program has targeted to provide micro loans to 100 residents in each ward for the period.

Since February 2012, SHIPO Marketing Officer and Communication and Marketing Consultant Marlou Bullens from Holland have together been engaged in the preparation of Marketing Strategy for this PROGRAM. To make this possible, SHIPO has involved local financial Institutions Twitangage SACCOS and Wafanyabiashara Njombe SACCOS Uwemba Branch in all financial matters and SHIPO trained technicians (from Kisangani and Uvinjo Groups) for technical issues to implement this PROGRAM.

For effectiveness of the Program a number of marketing strategies were agreed to disseminate information about the PROGRAM to the target market. We agreed to use a local radio Uplands Fm for radio advert, printed materials (leaflets and posters), press release to media and Road shows.

As mentioned ROADSHOW was one of the marketing strategies for creating awareness awareness and sensitization of the Program in the areas involved; a decision was made to have four road shows in four villages of the two Wards. At Uwemba ward road shows were conducted aat Uwemba village and Magoda village while at Utalingolo ward road shows were conductedat Utalingolo village and Ihalula village.

On 15th April we had our first Road show at Uwemba Village. Awareness creation is normally done by using a car with music system moving around the village announcing that people should assemble on the gathering place for the road show meeting. After people have gathered presenters from SHIPO, Installers, SACCOS and Champions are given time to present about their organisations and the program at large.
All these marketing strategies have been so effective in creating awareness and sensitizing the communities of the pilot areas because people have been so much motivated with Saccos Program. The number of loan applications have gone up to more than 100 in both wards.

The exhibitions were such important to the organistaion because so much was learnt from other Organizations in the industry.

Training Magugu, Arusha, Tanzania

Rota Sludge training
Well digging and improving

SHIPO trained 13 participants (8 men and 5 women) in December 2011 and January 2012 in Magugu, Arusha, Tanzania.

Following subjects were trained in theoretical and practice:

  • Rota sludge drilling
After making two boreholes, the group is ready to start drilling themselves
  • Well digging and lining
  • Fine tune & improve well construction techniques
  • Installation of rope pumps on wells and boreholes
  • Latrine slab production
  • Guide block construction
  • Latrine hole digging & construction
  • Tippy tap production
  • SHIPO delivered two types of drilling sets (Baptist and Rota Sludge), well digging equipment and materials for the first 6 pumps and latrines at the project site in Magugu.

There is a big demand for low cost water and sanitation technologies in Magugu. After one month the trained teams already received 5 requests for new boreholes and 15 requests for pump installation on existing wells.

The project will continue with a WOW-visit to Njombe and on the job guidance in Magugu.

World wide Rural Water Supply Network (RWSN) conference in Uganda

Pump installed at Speke hotel
Pump installed at Speke hotel

On 28 Nov until 1 Dec 2011 SHIPO participated in the world wide Rural Water Supply Network conference in Uganda in the exhibition and two presentations.

SHIPO installed a rope pump and demonstrated how to drill a borehole in the garden of the oldest hotel in Uganda (Speke Hotel). Low cost solutions were known to most participants of the conference. But the real live working model and the method of involving the private sector with the commercial sold pumps was a eye-opener for many people. In Tanzania rope pumps are now bought by people direct from local producers (self supply). This was possible after the producers have gained a lot of experience from a sponsored program.

Contacts from the conference are leading slowly to new similar self supply programs in Uganda, Kenya and Soudan (more info: SHIPO Training centre).

In conversations, SHIPO learned about the low cost EMAS pump. At this moment SHIPO is experimenting with it. For more info: EMAS international.
After the conference SHIPO shared experiences with a local hand pump producer in Kampala.
