Description of the project

SHIPO and ACRA are partner organizations in promoting education on health, hygiene and sanitation. SHIPO provided at the begin of 2010 training for 22 primary schools in the Tove-Mtwango area. The program has three components:
Component one is to train the 22 schools in SWASH (school water, sanitation and hygiene), working close together with district education officer, district health officer and hospital nurse. Every school had a baseline research and a training followed. During two years a monitoring will be done to see if there is progress in SWASH on these schools.

Component two of the program is to create awareness in 15 villages on health, hygiene and sanitation. This is done by community meetings presenting fact sheets. Coaches are used to monitor the program and to help people realise the goals.

Component three is start producing slab latrines and school latrines in the villages. Every household who wants a slab latrines signs a contract with the revolving fund. SHIPO trains masons in the villages and monitors the production of the slab latrines. According to the needs of the schools SHIPO build school latrines.
