Project purpose

Support primary education for children in the age of 5 to 14 in London sub village.

Beneficiaries

The community of London sub village, especially the primary school children and their parents.

Donor

Tuning Foundation NCDO and St. Michael College

Description of the project

Before starting the project SHIPO officers conduct a meeting with the community to sensitize them, to establish a construction committee and to make plans.

During planning of this project SHIPO decided to start first with water recharge system, because the site is on top of a hill and reaching water might be a problem. The villagers started also planting Vetiver grass (the plant makes rainwater to stay into the soil instead of running off). SHIPO is also drilling a borehole together with the villagers.

After this part is finished (June 2010) the constructing of four classrooms, two offices, latrines and one teacher house will start. In the original plan are two teacher houses, but the budget is not enough to build the second teacher house. The donor is also providing funds for furniture and for creating a vegetable garden to feed the children.

After finishing the construction of the school the social phase starts. The social phase aims at maintaining the building, establishing a school fund, food provision for the children and continues creating awareness for school water, sanitation and hygiene (SWASH).

Project progress

Foundations of all buildings are made and water facilities are almost finished and after that the construction of the buildings will start.
