Project purpose

Pilot in rural self supply for water and sanitation with microcredit and private sector. Through actual small scale implementation, this pilot project makes it possible for people in remote villages to access loans to buy water products like pumps, wells and boreholes direct from local producers. Without sponsoring the products.

Beneficiaries

People in the wards: Uwemba and Utalingoro.

Donor

Aqua for All and Water Right

Description of the project

SHIPO started a project where existing rural microcredit institutes provide loans for pumps and other water related products. The customer, who receives the loan, will buy the water product (eq. pump) commercially from a local producer (trained by SHIPO). SHIPO will work out business cases on how to generate income with a pump. With that income the customer will pay back his loan.
In this way, the customers will no longer depend on donations and will have complete ownership over the product. As a side effect local entrepreneurs who produce and install pumps or other water related products deliver direct to their customers and their business will increase sustainably.
SHIPO has an important guidance, monitoring and marketing role in this project.
